Kastoria, one of the most enchanting cities in Northern Greece, is located in Western Macedonia and is built amphitheatrically on the shores of Lake Orestiada. From above, it appears to be “embraced” by the lake, creating a breathtaking natural setting.
The city is renowned for its unique architecture, the mansions of the 17th and 18th centuries, and its picturesque cobbled alleys. Stroll through Doltso, the old town of Kastoria, and feel the magic of the past come alive through the grand buildings and blooming courtyards.
Lake Orestiada is the jewel of the region. If you enjoy walking, the path around the lake will offer you moments of peace and mesmerizing views of nature and the city.
Kastoria also stands out for its wealth of Byzantine and post-Byzantine monuments, with over 70 churches adorning the city. Among them, the Panagia Mavriotissa, built in 1082, is one of the most important monastic monuments in the area.
At the entrance of the city, on the lake’s shores, you’ll find the mysterious Dragon’s Cave, a unique geological phenomenon featuring freshwater lakes and impressive stalactite formations.
History and culture come to life through the city’s museums, such as the Byzantine Museum and the Folklore Museum housed in the Nerantzis Aivazis Mansion. Just outside Kastoria, in Dispilio, lies the impressive prehistoric lakeside settlement discovered in 1992, revealing the region’s long-standing human presence.
The natural environment is complemented by the imposing Grammos and Vitsi mountains, which offer opportunities for hiking, exploration, and experiencing the untamed beauty of Macedonian nature.
And of course, no visit to Kastoria is complete without tasting its local flavors. Traditional dishes, the region’s fine legumes, and local delicacies delight every visitor.
