Ileia


Ileia is located in one of the most beautiful spots, in the western part of Peloponnese which combines lush areas with a long coastline of the Ionian Sea.

The significant history of ancient era includes the establishment of the Olympic games, performed there for the first time in the stadium of Ancient Olympia, which is well preserved and available to visitors.

In the following centuries, Ileia became the center of the Greek Revolution of 1821. Famous historical figures such as Paleon Patron Germanos acted there, as well as European allies, like Pierre de Coubertin whose monument has been erected due to his contribution to the war.

Olympia and Pyrgos, the capital of Ileia both offer interesting museums such as the Archaeological Museum of Olympia, the Olympic Games’ Museum, the Archimedes’ Museum, and the unique museum of Ancient Greek Technology in the village of Katakolo.

Nowadays the area has been developed rapidly. Its famous beaches, such as Katakolo, Kourouta, Zacharo, Paluki e.t.c. host many tourists as well as locals enjoying their holidays next to the lovely Ionian Sea.

Visitors can also try the Peloponnese cuisine in traditional taverns and taste local wines in famous award-winning wineries such as Ktima Merkouri and Olympia Gi.
